3rd Annual Blazing Paddles Paddlefest
Third Annual Blazing Paddles Paddlefest
Returns to Cleveland’s Cuyahoga River
Cleveland, Ohio (June 22, 2021) — The third annual Blazing Paddles Paddlefest makes a triumphant return to Cleveland’s comeback Cuyahoga River on Saturday, July 24, 2021. In partnership with Cuyahoga River Safety Task Force stakeholders and affiliate organizations, North Coast Multisports, and Blazing Paddles Paddlefest sponsors, Share the River is providing two opportunities for paddlers to enjoy Blazing Paddles.
A leisurely 8.6-mile paddle up and down the scenic and historic Cuyahoga River. Paddlers can follow a digital guide that allows them to explore and experience Cleveland’s waterfront history and learn about current industrial stakeholder operations. Paddlers can choose one of three turnaround points. Registration for the recreational paddle is via Race Roster:
Kayaks, paddleboards, and canoes will race one of three urban courses (2, 5.4, and 13 miles) that flow past Cleveland’s unique mix of riverfront sites where iconic bridges and pyramids of sand and stone stand in contrast to paved paths, greenspaces, and an increasing number of homes overlooking the river. Registration for the races is via Paddle Guru.
People wanting to participate in Blazing Paddles but who do not own a kayak can rent one from our livery partners during the registration process (inc. Burning River Adventures and Great Lakes Watersports).
Blazing Paddles’ is presented by Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District with supporting sponsorship from the Port of Cleveland, Flats Forward Inc., and OHM Advisors. Our Emergency Medical Response provider is University Hospitals. PHASTAR. will manage Blazing Paddles’ on-the-water safety plan. The U.S. Coast Guard will enforce a safety zone upriver from the Center Street Swing Bridge from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. on July 24.
Blazing Paddles’ date coincides with the 225th anniversary of Moses Cleaveland’s survey team landing at the confluence of Lake Erie and the Cuyahoga River on July 22, 1796. Blazing Paddles will launch & recover from Cleveland Rowing Foundation and Cleveland Metroparks’ Merwin’s Wharf at Rivergate Park. Blazing Paddles is part of The Waterman Series that promotes paddlesports racing as an inclusive activity.
