Hack Cleveland & [unBail] Briefing: Google Maps for Criminal Cases
October 8 @ 5:30 pm
Join [unBail] as we showcase inform, a mobile application that helps defendants navigate the criminal legal system (CLS). We’re Google Maps for court cases.
The CLS is a maze that lawyers are trained to maneuver on behalf of most of us who aren’t familiar with the system, laws, language, and unwritten rules. Defendants must complete an estimated 200 distinct tasks during their legal proceeding. This can leave defendants feeling overwhelmed, lost, and profoundly disadvantaged as they attempt to navigate a system few of us understand. These disadvantages are acutely felt by black, brown, and low-income communities.
That’s why we developed inform. By using their case number or identifying information, the user finds their case seamlessly translated into a step by step guide of the legal process from point of first arrest, to expungement options, and beyond.
