SUMMARY:Community Book Club - Neighborhood Leadership Institute
DESCRIPTION:NLI’s Community Book Club is back with another offering!\nThe Inner Level: How More Equal Societies Reduce Stress\, Restore Sanity and Improve Everyone’s Well-Being by Richard Wilkinson and Kate Pickett is the 8th book in Neighborhood Leadership Institute’s Community Book Club. Hundreds of community members have contributed to ongoing dialogue on social justice in previous groups and we invite you to join as well. These Book Club discussions begin Tuesday September 14th. The group will convene weekly until October 12th.  Guests will participate in discussions led by NLI facilitator GiGi Elder. Participants should be ready to discuss the Introduction and Chapters 1 & 2 at the first session.   \nAbout the book:\nThe Inner Level explains how inequality affects us individually\, altering how we think\, feel and behave. It sets out the overwhelming evidence that material inequities have powerful psychological effects: when the gap between rich and poor increases\, so does the tendency to define and value ourselves and others in terms of superiority and inferiority. A deep well of data and analysis is drawn upon to empirically show\, for example\, that low social status leads to elevated levels of stress hormones\, and how rates of anxiety\, depression and addictions are intimately related to the inequality which makes that status paramount. Wilkinson and Pickett describe how these responses to hierarchies evolved\, and why the impacts of inequality on us are so severe. \n\nWhen\nSept. 14 – Oct. 12\, 2021\nTuesdays from 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm \nThis book is available at bookstores\, Cleveland Public Library and online.. NLI has also secured limited copies for those guests unable to secure their own copy. Contact Michelle for more info. \n\n\nWhere\nThis is an online event. Click here to access the weekly Tuesday Zoom:\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/88628470703 \n\n\nNLI Contact\nMichelle Broome\n216-812-8700\nmichelle@neighborhoodleadership.org

We will be actively enforcing the mask requirement. \nWe want to protect all of our participants and presenters\, as well as their families and networks\, from unknowing transmission of the virus. While vaccination confers significant protection\, there are populations such as people with chronic diseases\, immunocompromised\, or advanced age that may be at risk for break through infections. Also\, many of you have children and vulnerable individuals in your households and we are sensitive to their needs and risks. Masks may be removed when actively eating or drinking. \nWe will provide hand sanitizer and design layout of the event with distancing and safety in mind. \nIn addition\, given the recent surge in Delta and the inevitable introduction of the new variant Mu\, we are asking all non-vaccinated program participants\, speakers\, and volunteers to take a PCR test within 48 hours of the event. We ask that the results of the test be brought to registration at the event. We will have rapid tests on site and ask all participants manifesting any symptoms and all who have not received the vaccine to take a rapid test before entering the event. \nThis policy was developed in consultation with members of our board and medical professionals\, and we know that it imposes additional burdens for many. However\, we want to gather in person for this celebration and must do what we can to ensure the safety of all our participants. These protocols will enable all to enjoy the benefit of gathering together while limiting the potential spread of the virus. \n\nThank you to our CBB anniversary sponsors: \n\nBenesch\, Friedlander\, Coplan & Aronoff LLP\nFifth Third Bank\nPwC\nShook Construction\nWalter | Haverfield\n\nThank you to the CBB 21st Birthday Bash Host Committee: \n\nDavid Akers (CBB 2001)\nSeth Briskin (CBB 2001)\nSarah Brown (CBB 2018)\nRachel Ciomcia (CBB 2010)\nLynnette Crenshaw (CBB 2001)\nMichael DeAloia (CBB 2007)\nThomas Dewey (CBB 2014)\nJon Dittrich (CBB 2018)\nJoe Gramc (CBB 2016)\nAnnette Iwamoto (CBB 2017)\nShameka Jones Taylor (CBB 2008)\nMargy Judd (CBB 2001)\nBecca Kopp Levine (CBB 2012)\nLauren Mastracco (CBB 2017)\nSunny Nixon (CBB 2014)\nLeta Obertacz (CBB 2019)\nMayme Patthoff (CBB 2010)\nHallie Rich (CBB 2011)\nScott Simon (CBB 2001)\nLou Tisler (CBB 2001)
