SUMMARY:Breakfast with Chuck Todd\, Host of NBC's "Meet the Press"
DESCRIPTION:Since 1947\, NBC’s “Meet the Press” has provided its viewers with critical analysis on politics from the nation’s top thinkers and incisive interviews with political leaders from across the political spectrum. Since 2014\, Chuck Todd has hosted the show hailed as the longest-running show on American television. \nWith just over one month before election day\, Ohio is garnering the kind of attention that suggests it may still be a swing state. A recent NBC News poll suggests 64% of voters say they have high interest in the upcoming midterm elections\, an all-time high for a non-presidential year\, and the most recent statewide poll puts the senate race at a dead heat. \nChuck Todd has been working in political journalism for 30 years. In 2007\, he was brought to NBC by Tim Russert\, who then hosted “Meet the Press.” As a journalist\, political analyst\, anchor\, and moderator\, he has had a ringside seat from the Clinton era to today. \nJoin the City Club for breakfast with Chuck Todd as we traverse the political landscape of the state and the nation.

SUMMARY:Coming Out and Coming of Age
DESCRIPTION:Growing up can be hard enough. For LGBTQ+ youth\, coming out adds to the pressures and challenges as they come of age. Studies have shown that LGBTQ+ youth are more than four times as likely to attempt suicide than their peers. But when those kids are given access to LGBTQ-affirming spaces\, they reported lower rates of suicide attempts\, according to The Trevor Project. \nYet\, American public schools have become lightning rods in the culture wars and incubators for public policy targeting controversial topics. This includes discussions of sexuality\, gender identity and LGBTQ+ related topics in classrooms. Just seven years after gay marriage was legalized in the United States\, today’s youth and young adults are facing a changing climate in their schools and communities. It begs us to ask how they are faring\, and what can be done to ensure all students are provided a safe and inclusive classroom. \nJoin us for a conversation led by Ken Schneck\, Editor of the Buckeye Flame\, that centers LGBTQ+ youth voices in advance of National Coming Out Day.

SUMMARY:
DESCRIPTION:Heights Eco Fair is scheduled for  October 8th at Coventry PEACE Park \n  \nThe Cleveland Heights Green Team (CHGT) in partnership with Heights Libraries\, FutureHeights\, the Coventry Village Special Improvement District\, and Amplify on Coventry is hosting the 2nd annual Heights Eco Fair on October 8th from noon to 4.00 pm at the Coventry PEACE Park. \nThe event serves as a space for the Northeast Ohio community to connect with local resources with the intention to highlight and promote a more environmentally friendly and healthier lifestyle. The fair is designed to raise awareness about issues and solutions and to spark ideas for new collaborations. \nThe lineup of exhibitors and partners is extensive and organized in four \ncategories: Sustainable Living; Healthy Living; Eco Kids; and Swap Zone\, where residents will have the opportunity to bring their unwanted\, but in working condition\, CDs\, video games\, DVDs\, VHS\, cassettes\, as well as children’s books. They can swap or take media and books. Leftovers will be recycled by GreenDisk or donated to organizations in need. \nThe fair will also feature performances by local artists\, healthy and sustainably \nsourced food for purchase\, a community bike ride organized by Bike Cleveland\, and yoga and dance in the park. One major addition to this year’s program is an art exhibit by CH-UH High School students. About 250 students have worked on upcycle-art projects since the start of the school year\, utilizing materials from within the school building that would otherwise have ended up in the trash. Visitors will get a chance to admire the students’ works of art and vote on their favorites. \nThe Eco Fair is a family friendly-community-building event where visitors can participate in hands-on activities that can increase their awareness of sustainability practices while introducing them to a wide variety of vendors with expertise in earth-friendly techniques and pro-tips.  \nVisit https://www.chgreenteam.org/eco-fair-2022 for a complete list of activities\, exhibitors\, performances\, and parking information.

SUMMARY:50 Years of Clean Water Investment: Take a unique tour inside NEORSD’s sewer system at Edgewater Beach
DESCRIPTION:Protecting our water resources through wastewater treatment and stormwater management has evolved over the last century with many systems in the nation over 100 years old. \nWith the signing of President Biden’s Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act\, drinking water issues in Jackson\, Mississippi\, and the dramatic loss of drinking water and sewer service during Hurricane Fiona in Puerto Rico\, the need for sufficient and sustained infrastructure funding is once again front and center. Locally\, investment in the region’s wastewater and stormwater systems by the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District (NEORSD) has been ongoing for the last 50 years. To date\, NEORSD has spent over $5 billion to protect water quality in Lake Erie and its tributaries. \nJoin the City Club and the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District on Tuesday\, October 11\, 2022 from 4:00pm to 5:30pm for a unique and informative tour of the century old combined sewer at Edgewater Beach. Participants will have the opportunity to walk inside the sewer and learn about NEORSD’s historical investments that resulted in a cleaner Lake Erie and Cuyahoga River\, just to name a few\, and learn about the future investment plans for our region’s clean water infrastructure. \nThis tour is limited to 20 participants and is weather-dependent. \nImportant Safety Information: This is a confined space. Attendees will be required to participate in a brief confined space training on-site the day of the event. Additionally\, attendees will be required to wear rescue wristlets\, a hard hat\, safety glasses\, and gloves. Close-toed shoes with a substantial\, slip-resistant sole (such as hiking boots or garden boots)\, and long pants are required. Because the sewer pipe is narrow\, participants will tour the sewer pipe in small groups.

SUMMARY:Vibrate Higher: Using Creativity to Emotionally Heal and Inspire Social Change with Talib Kweli
DESCRIPTION:Doors open at 4:30pm with light refreshments. The event begins at 5:30pm. Tickets are FREE\, but required. \nAccording to research\, music is a crucial tool for navigating emotions and reducing stress. It also is a unifying and sometimes rallying force that bridges differences in identities\, political ideologies\, and cultural backgrounds. So\, when a recent survey from the Kaiser Family Foundation found the pandemic’s mental health impact has been pronounced among communities of color\, how can we activate lyrics and hip-hop as an emotional well-being tool for the benefit of our neighborhoods? \nTalib Kweli is a Brooklyn-based MC widely known for his work with Mos Def as one-half of Black Star. He is regarded as one of the most lyrically-gifted\, socially aware\, and politically insightful rappers to emerge in the last 20 years. He is also the author of his new memoir\, Vibrate Higher: A Rap Story\, which is a call to action and first-hand account of the power of revolutionary Black voices. \nThe City Club will bring the conversation directly to the community at the Morning Star Baptist Church\, in partnership with the Saint Luke’s Foundation for their 25th anniversary. Join us as Talib Kweli sits down in conversation with Shanelle Smith Whigham on how music can be used to promote healing and community strength.

SUMMARY:It Takes a Village: Improving Black Infant and Maternal Health
DESCRIPTION:Cleveland’s infant mortality rate is one of the worst in the nation\, and according to the Cuyahoga County Board of Health\, Black babies in Cuyahoga County are almost three times more likely to die before their first birthday than white babies. Despite some improvements in infant mortality generally\, the infant mortality rate among Black babies has not significantly changed over the past decade. Maternal mortality has also increased during the pandemic – another statistic disproportionately impacting women of color in a city recently ranked the worst for Black women. \nBirthing Beautiful Communities aims to improve these statistics. They tackle the social determinants of health and real-life circumstances that make mothers and their babies vulnerable to infant and maternal mortality. Since 2014\, Birthing Beautiful Communities has served the community by providing childbirth/parenting education workshops\, breastfeeding support\, nutritional guidance\, doula training\, medical advocacy\, and more. \nIn 2021\, Jazmin Long was announced as the President & CEO of Birthing Beautiful Communities\, after serving as the Vice President of Fund Development. As part of our Local Heroes series\, join the City Club as we hear from Long on the challenges and opportunities in this work during Pregnancy & Infant Loss Awareness Month.

SUMMARY:A Global City for All
DESCRIPTION:Cleveland has always been a welcoming\, gateway city. Immigrants and refugees are playing an increasingly critical role in every facet of Greater Cleveland’s economy. According to Global Cleveland\, they are twice as likely as native-born to become entrepreneurs\, and nearly one-fifth of immigrants age 27 years or older in the Cleveland metro area have a graduate or professional degree–contributing to the “brain gain” needed to support a thriving city. \nBut recent national politics and policies have changed the rhetoric around immigrants and refugees\, blurring fact from fiction. This has created a challenging environment for newcomers to our country. How can Cleveland leverage the many talents of immigrants and refugees who join our communities\, and truly become a global city for all? \nJoin us to hear from Dr. Ruth Ellen Wasem\, Senior Fellow at the College of Education and Public Affairs at Cleveland State University. From 2016 to 2022\, Dr. Wasem was a professor of public policy practice at the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas in Austin\, where she taught courses on immigration and citizenship policies\, refugee and human security policies\, and legislative development. Dr. Wasem continues to be engaged in Washington\, D.C.\, and as an opinion contributor for The Hill. \nDr. Wasem will provide introductory remarks\, followed by a panel conversation with local immigrant leaders\, Kwame Botchway\, Larisse Mondok\, and Marina Jackman. The conversation will be moderated by Patrick Espinosa\, Managing Partner at Sus Abogados Latinos. \n—- \nThe livestream will be available beginning at 12:00pm. Have questions? SUMMARY:Beyond 3pm: Stepping In When School Is Out
DESCRIPTION:Out-of-School Time (OST) is largely defined as the hours before school (6am-8am) and after school (3pm-6pm)\, as well as the months over summer break. It’s those intermittent times when a K-12 student isn’t in school\, but still requires care. That’s where OST services step in. These programs provide safe and enriching environments during critical moments in a student’s growth and development. Research has long provided evidence that structured care during these hours has lasting benefits for the whole family. \nFor students\, participating in OST services has improved academic achievement\, increased social and emotional outcomes\, and better nutrition. Afterschool programs have also been effective at narrowing achievement gaps and slowing learning loss. For a parent\, the availability of aftercare may be a deciding factor between schools or neighborhoods. It can also provide the much-needed stability to continue in the workforce\, or even move up the career ladder to better provide for their families. In a city like Cleveland\, where nearly half of all households are women-led\, access to OST services can mean increased success\, particularly for working mothers. \nRight now\, demand for afterschool programs has skyrocketed. For every child in an afterschool program\, three are waiting to get in. Add to this\, a bus driver shortage and other staffing challenges have further complicated accessibility and affordability. How can we better support OST services so all students can reach their full potential? \nJoin the City Club as we learn what opportunities and challenges lie ahead in OST services from top local leadership in the sector\, moderated by Dr. Dorothy Moulthrop\, CEO of Open Doors Academy. \n—- \nThe livestream will be available beginning at 12:00pm. SUMMARY:Strengthening Democracy\, One Small Step at a Time: 2022 City Club Annual Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The special program for the 2022 City Club Annual Meeting will begin at 11:00 am with a brief overview of the City Club’s last year of accomplishments\, followed by lunch at 11:30am\, and the City Club Friday Forum featuring Dave Isay at noon. \nIf you know Dave Isay\, you likely know of him as the founder of StoryCorps\, the audio project that has been inviting Americans to interview family members about their lives for nearly 20 years. For years\, NPR listeners have built a Friday routine around the selection of these interviews that are shared over the air during Morning Edition\, inspiring listeners with the wisdom\, intimacy and simple joy of hearing a conversation between two people expressing their bonds of affection. \nLast year\, Isay and his colleagues decided to see if this simple conversation model could help citizens bridge the nation’s partisan divide. One Small Step invites citizens from different political backgrounds to interview one another about their perspectives and how they came to those views. The result is what you might hope for–more light\, more understanding\, less heat\, and less antagonism.
