SUMMARY:GOJO Industries: 75 Years of Ingenuity and Innovation
DESCRIPTION:This is the rescheduled forum from Friday\, June 17\, 2022. For questions about your tickets\, please contact Amber Smith at asmith@cityclub.org. \nFrom its founding in 1946\, ingenuity and innovation have been at the heart of GOJO Industries. At the time\, tire and rubber manufacturers in Akron were cleaning their hands with harsh chemicals. So founders Goldie and Jerry Lippman created a one-step\, rinse-off hand cleaner as a solution. Purell Hand Sanitizer would follow in 1988. Now in its 75th year\, GOJO Industries is the Akron area’s largest private employer with more than 2\,500 people in the city and in outlying facilities. \nGOJO is no stranger to viral surges\, but when the COVID pandemic hit in early 2020\, scientists and epidemiologists raced to understand the novel virus. Demand for cleaning and sanitizing products surged and GOJO was thrust into the national spotlight. In response\, GOJO invested more than $400M in capacity expansion and vertical integration\, and more than doubled the number of its locations in Northeast Ohio to meet the unprecedented demand for its products. They prioritized first responders and the healthcare community–all to help to save lives. \nCarey Jaros began her relationship with GOJO as a Board Director in 2014. Then in 2016\, Carey joined GOJO full-time to lead Innovation\, Marketing\, and Enterprise Strategy\, and shortly thereafter was promoted to Chief Operating Officer\, before being named President and CEO in January 2020. \nJoin us in-person at the City Club to hear from Carey Jaros on how she successfully led GOJO Industries during the early days of COVID-19 pandemic\, staying flexible today\, and what’s next after 75 years of innovation.

SUMMARY:Economic Growth: Redefining Success for Midwestern Cities
DESCRIPTION:The definition of success in economic growth for small-to-mid-sized cities has been dominated by its ability to attract more jobs\, bring in new business\, and grow population. By using this framework\, Midwestern cities can be perceived as failing\, despite thriving in other overlooked indicators. This perception incentivizes those in economic development to chase the next “big thing\,” rather than focus on strategies that benefit the people already working and living in the region. Billboards have started to flank highways in other states in an attempt to attract new big businesses. And civic leaders have offered tax breaks and extravagant packages to draw in large corporations. But how do we redefine indicators of success so as to benefit the people and leverage the assets we already have? \nJoin us for a panel conversation on how we can build on our existing assets to meet the needs of local residents\, and flip the script on what successful economic growth truly means for Midwestern cities.

SUMMARY:Happy Dog is Taken Over by Gen-Z
DESCRIPTION:Generation Z\, or “Gen Z” is roughly defined as somebody born between 1997 to 2012. And they are coming of age. In Florida\, Maxwell Frost became the first Gen Z elected to Congress. And a recent analysis by the Center for American Progress uncovered that Gen Z is the “Most Pro-Union” generation–driving a wave of unionization across major corporations\, nonprofits\, and college campuses. \nExperts are now trying to understand Gen Z in the workforce\, and are asking some of the same questions asked of Millennials just under 15 years ago: What are the most important factors that will attract and retain younger workers? And what can we expect to be shifted around workplace culture? Answering these questions\, and more\, is a panel of Gen Z voices\, in conversation with Grace Heffernan with the Northeast Ohio Worker’s Center. \nJoin us at the Happy Dog in Gordon Square as we are “Taken Over” by Gen Z\, and learn straight from the source\, how we can all best support the literal future of work.

SUMMARY:Jobs of the Future: Building the Talent Pipeline in Behavioral Healthcare
DESCRIPTION:It’s no secret that healthcare providers are experiencing the challenges of attracting and retaining staff. Nearly every respondent (98%) in a recent survey by the Ohio Council of Behavioral Health and Family Services Providers reported difficulties in recruiting staff\, and nearly as many cited significant challenges in keeping employees. \nIn 2020\, Mental Health America showed Ohio as particularly understaffed\, with only one behavioral healthcare worker for every 560 individuals. And demand has only grown since then\, especially for youth support. There has never been a more urgent need to identify and close gaps in the talent pipeline for social workers\, therapists\, substance abuse counselors\, and more. What will it take to strengthen the behavioral healthcare workforce? \nJoin us at the City Club for a conversation on how we can leverage this moment to both respond to immediate needs\, and create the behavioral healthcare jobs needed for the future.

SUMMARY:Building Resilience through Sports with Paralympian Alana Nichols
DESCRIPTION:Growing up\, sports were not just something that Alana Nichols did. They were her identity. After suffering a traumatic spinal cord injury while snowboarding at the age of 17\, she was paralyzed from the waist down. Thinking her athletic career was over\, she experienced a wheelchair basketball game her freshman year at the University of New Mexico\, where the physical and competitive gameplay reignited her athletic endeavors and her passion for sports and adventure. \nAlana went on to compete in several Paralympic games and is the first woman Paralympian to win gold medals at both Summer and Winter games. She has competed in wheelchair basketball\, Paralympic alpine monoskiing\, and at her final Paralympic games in Rio\, paracanoeing. \nJoin us for an intimate conversation as Alana shares her journey of resilience\, identity\, and passion for challenging herself and others.

SUMMARY:Transforming Philanthropic Culture for Healthier\, Thriving Communities
DESCRIPTION:Philanthropic giving is at the core of every community and lives in the heart of humanity. SUMMARY:50 Years of NEORSD: Cleaner Water. Safe Recreation. A Better Future.
DESCRIPTION:The Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District (NEORSD) was established in 1972 and has been in the business of cleaning wastewater and managing stormwater for 50 years. Today\, NEORSD is one of the largest clean-water agencies in Ohio. Thanks to the work of more than 750 employees\, NEORSD treats 90 billion gallons of water every year for Cleveland and 61 suburban communities in Northeast Ohio. \nAt its core\, NEORSD provides critical public health infrastructure. With each rainy day\, toilet flush\, and sink full of dishes–it’s easy to take for granted. Yet\, the Sewer District is behind it all\, 24/7\, 365 days a year. \nAs CEO\, Ms. Dreyfuss-Wells oversees the operation of the agency. This includes hundreds of miles of sewer and stream networks\, a multi-billion-dollar 25-year Project Clean Lake program\, and a regional wet-weather strategy for the health of Lake Erie and more than one million residents. \nWith major investments already underway\, and more opportunities forthcoming with the Infrastructure Act\, what are the future plans for our region’s clean water infrastructure? As part of the City Club’s Local Heroes series\, join us as we hear from Kyle Dreyfuss-Wells\, and the Sewer District’s efforts to provide cleaner water\, safe recreation\, and a better future.
