Right Where I Belong

By John D. Luteran (CBB 2026), Destination Cleveland, WATER

“I was born a Clevelander in exile.”

That’s how I started my Vision Stand. I was looking for a way to talk about how much it means to me to be a Clevelander and be exactly where I belong. My parents, lifelong Clevelanders, were starting their lives in the Columbus area, but getting back home to Cleveland was always the goal.

When I found out I was accepted into the Class of 2026, I felt honored. I had heard so much about the program from colleagues and other alumni, a part of me couldn’t believe I had been selected. Then I saw the list of the entire class and imposter syndrome immediately set in. I looked at all of these amazing people joining from top organizations and businesses throughout the region and wondered if I truly belonged.

Then we had our opening retreat. I couldn’t have been more wrong.

Everyone talks about the Bridge Builders experience as life changing, not just for the leadership skills and personal development you gain but more importantly for the lasting bonds you form with your classmates. I was admittedly at least a little surprised how true it was, but there’s no doubt: believe the hype.

When I walk into one of our sessions, I immediately feel support, energy, love and a collective buy-in from the entire room, due in no small part to the thoughtful programming and facilitation of Angela, Rachel and Hailey Joy. It’s rare to be with a group of people that are all committed to growth, open to change and generous with encouragement.

Sharing with the group and participating in discussions feels effortless. Sure, there’s the normal amount of social anxiety, but it evaporates almost as quickly as it’s felt. There’s no pressure, just an environment designed for collective achievement in a way I’d never have imagined I’d be a part of.

Whether it’s the small groups we meet up with in between sessions, fun team building outings with my LAP Team (shoutout Jenia, Cynthia, Caitlin, Jacqueline, Brian, Sam and Wycliffe!) or one-on-one lunches to get a classmate closer to the Akers Challenge, I’ve only ever felt the same thing:

I’m right where I belong.

I’m incredibly grateful for this opportunity to grow with such a special group of people and learn more about how I can affect change in the city that I love. I fully get why alumni feel this way about Cleveland Bridge Builders, even though it took until 2026 to find the best class ever.
