Natalie E. Joseph, MD, FACS is the recently appointed Chair of the Department of Surgery at MetroHealth Medical Center having served in this role on an interim basis since December 2025. In her nearly 18 years at MetroHealth, she has served in several leadership roles including Interim Executive Director of the Cancer Institute, the Director of the Division of Surgical Oncology, Director of the Center for Breast Health at the MetroHealth System, and she is the immediate President of the Medical Staff. Dr. Joseph is also a Professor of Surgery at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine.
Dr. Joseph received her Medical Degree from Temple University School of Medicine, in Philadelphia, PA. She completed her surgical training at University Hospitals of Cleveland, and pursued fellowship training in Surgical Oncology at Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia. Board-certified by the American Board of Surgery, Dr. Joseph has been caring for patients at MetroHealth since 2008.
Recognized for her clinical excellence in breast surgical oncology, Dr. Joseph specializes in the surgical care of cancer patients, treating patients with both early and advanced disease. Known for her compassionate, patient-centered approach, she is dedicated to educating the community about early detection, the importance of lifesaving breast cancer screening, and helping patients gain a better understanding of their treatment options. She is engaged in research and outreach efforts aimed at expanding access to care and reducing disparities in cancer outcomes.
Dr. Joseph has also established herself as a leader in surgery at a national level serving in leadership roles in several national surgical societies including the Society of Surgical Oncology, American Society of Breast Surgeons, the Central Surgical Association, and more than a decade of service as an examiner for the American Board of Surgery. Dr. Joseph also continues to invest in her own growth as a leader and is currently enrolled in the prestigious Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM®) Fellowship, a highly competitive program that prepares leaders to meet the challenges and opportunities facing healthcare and academic medicine.
Of all her achievements, she is most proud of her family. She is mother to her two sons, Cole and Nathan, and wife to her husband of almost 27 years, Dr. Christopher Smith.
